Nathan Westover’s 8th goal of the BCHL season will likely stand as his most memorable. Westy’s one-time rocket from the point beat his former club, from which he asked to be traded, 1:27 into extra time last night as the Vees picked up their 10th win in 11 games. The former Smoke Eater is looking better in ‘Vees Blue’ every game and he sure looks happy to be part of a winning team.
You had feel bad for the Trail Smoke Eaters last night, as they made the most of their early chances, chased Bryan Mountain from the Vees net, got superb goaltending from Grant Rollheiser, but couldn’t bury a determined Vees club that heavily outchanced the Smokies all night.
Trailing (no pun intended) 2-0 heading into the 3rd period Zac Dalpe pulled the Vees within one in the opening minutes of the frame, while Brett Hextall tied the game on a power play with the goalie pulled for the Vees with just 31 ticks left on the game clock (some play-by-play hack thought Kyle McMurphy scored the winner, the Referee thought it was Anthony Perdicaro, but it was indeed Brett Hextall).
It’s the story of two teams heading opposite directions as the Smokies pick up their 6th loss in a row (2nd in OT), while the Vees have lost just a single game since returning from their Vancouver Island Road trip on December 10th… That’s good!
Pencil Westover in for another solid performance Saturday as the Vees welcome the Alberni Valley Bulldogs to town. Number 6 will be fired up as the last place ‘dogs just happen to be another former club of the Vees Defender.
