Captain Denver Manderson scored a natural hat trick, added an assist, and was named the game’s first star. Manderson now is three points behind the league’s leading scorer – Mark Zengerle – with a game in hand.
Rookie defender Joey Laleggia had three power play assists in the win and now has 25 points in 24 games. Beau Bennett had two helpers on the night and Garrett Milan had two goals to get to 16 on the season, and in the process snapped a six games goal-less drought.
Sean Bonar stopped 22 of 25 shots to earn his 12th victory of the season. The 18-year-old hadn’t played since the 14th of November as he missed time recovering from the swine flu.
Joe Morgan had two goals for the Spruce Kings, who actually led this game 3-2 early in the second period before the Vees popped four unanswered goals. 16-year-old Lyndon Martell popped his eight of the season and added an assist but the Kings were outclassed on this night.
Kyle Neilson stopped 39 of 44 shots in the loss as the Spruce Kings allowed an empty net goal late as they tried to get the game within one. Ben Sexton set up Milan for his second in a selfless play with an empty net ahead of him.
Both teams combined for six goals on the power play on Saturday, the Vees were 3/4 on the night while the Prince George made good on 3 of 6 opportunities.
Next action for the Vees comes Sunday afternoon as the Vees travel to Trail to face the Smokies in a matinee affair. Puck drop on Sunday is at 3:00, while the pre-game show on EZ Rock starts at 2:45.
