The ‘Vees Blog’ gives fans behind the scenes access to the Penticton Vees Hockey Club of the BCHL. News, previews, interviews and more from Ryan Pinder the 3rd year Play-by-Play voice of the Penticton Vees (that’s me!).
I’ve been calling hockey games since 03-04, when I found broadcasting the University of Lethbridge Men’s Pronghorns Games more interesting than my Advanced Microeconomic Theory Course.
After graduating from U of L I attended Humber College in Toronto to brush up my broadcasting skills. I dropped out of my program early (Mom is Proud) and moved to Fort St. John, BC in 2006 to call games for the Junior ‘B’ Huskies and Sr. ‘AAA’ Flyers, host afternoons at Moose FM in Fort St. John and act as Sports Director at the station.
I’ve worked at many Canadian media outlets including: City TV in Calgary, The Score in Toronto, Moose FM in Fort St. John (as mentioned above), CFFR in Calgary, and spent a Summer watching grown men cry at the Hockey Hall of Fame in Toronto.
Each month I write a piece on the Interior Conference for HockeyNow, have a weekly segment with Rick Quinton (CKNW) on Sportstalk Weekend that airs Saturday Nights across BC, and you can catch my Vees game recaps on Castanet.net. Tune in Mondays for ‘Boston Pizza Vees This Week’ which I host on EZ ROCK AM 800 from 6-7, and swing by Coach’s Corner on Thursdays at Kettle Valley Station Pub for more Vees talk.

Why do you keep messing with the Vaselli, Ouellette, Reid line….let them keep producing.

Not sure what Anonymous means by ‘YOU’ as I have no influence on the lines, but a valid comment otherwise!

Awesome game last nite! Fred you need to use Bonar in net more often. We enjoy your post and pregame show. We look forward to listening to all the games on-line.

I like this Brodie Reid kid although he is not scoring he plating alot of critical time> It would be interesting to know the teams win percentage and power play stats since reid joined the team. Fred should utilize him more as there is a reason Northeastern wants him and he scored 52 goals last year with Burnaby a team that has been struggling

Pretty pathetic banquet last night when there is no mention about your senior players picked up in trades that are having a huge impact on the teams success. Fred obviously doesn’t understand or respect this and this will hurt team chemistry for the playoff run. Besides their talent do you really think the 17 year olds would be having success if other teams were not having to focus on other top players. Fred’s management style and disrespect for veterns will catch up to him and limit success. He needs to focus on the whole team to be a complete coach as he is still a rookie blessed with good recruiting skills

Hockey Man, can’t say I agree… Fred talked about the importance of bringing players in and changing the culture of the locker room (he mentioned it as a turning point in the season)… each player has a role and will take 23 players to win.

Thats good to hear but is it translated down into the dressing room where it matters most? I have a sense it is not. Enjoy your work keep it up.

I can’t believe some of the players that were not recognized at the banquet. Hardware is one thing but you need to talk about each and every player. Their contribution to the team maybe some great dressing room stories all would enjoy. Make them feel part of the ceremony as well. I don’t care who you are when you don’t get noticed for your hard work it leaves a bad feeling. It is a matter of respect.

Any player in particular player(s) that you would like to recognize ‘HMMMM’?
Hockey Man // Feb 28, 2009 at 10:15 pm
Do you know what the Vees win percentage and power play stats are since the addition of Reid and Grassi from Burnaby. This would interesting information.

Ouellette and Paltridge would have been my two choices. Josepher was on the line.

Ryan, Al & Chad, Your pre-game, post game and game commentary is awesome. We have been forced to listen to broadcasters from other teams…ummm like PG…boring and unfair comments.

Thanks for a great season, Ryan. Hope you’re back next year. With a little more grit and size things are shaping up to be an awesome team next season. Can’t wait! Who do we lobby to have the post-game back at the Barley Mill? The SOEC is nice but we’ve lost that personal touch. What do you think?

I was wondering if there had been any discussion in Penticton of playing an exhibition game with the Wenatchee Wild of the NAHL. One of the things lost when USA Hockey denied Wenatchee in the BCHL was a chance for the two teams to play. I think a nice border rivalry would have resulted. Anyway, there was some talk of playing preseason this year. It doesn’t look like it will happen, just wondering if there was any discussion of it up north?

Our trek to Vernon was well worth it. So far the best game of the season. We are keeping an eye on the Kanata Kid!
